How Rural Biogas and Coal Mine Methane are Providing Clean Energy to China

Methane is 22 times more powerful than CO2 in its heat trapping capabilities and is one of six greenhouse gases controlled by the clean development mechanism under the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). It also presents a particular problem for China’s coal mining sector as it becomes explosive when it mixes with oxygen at certain levels. The capture and utilization of methane can not only limit our impact on global warming, but also provide various other benefits.
